Human transformation of the environment has reached a global scale, triggering the start of a new epoch, the Anthropocene. Human activities traditionally included the destruction of natural or near-natural habitats, and profound modification of ecological systems that has become unsustainable. We need a paradigm shift: the currently dominant intensive, exploitative economic activities have to be replaced with ones that minimise anthropogenic impacts, are sustainable, and embraces ecological principles. The HUN-REN-DE Anthropocene Ecology Research Group focuses on the three most important anthropogenic activities: agriculture, forestry and urbanisation. Using a novel, ecosystem-centered approach, we use quantitative field experimental methods to study the ecological impact of these human activities. Our aim is to develop practical recommendations that harmonise with ecological principles, and ensure the protection of biodiversity, as well as the sustained functioning of ecological processes and services.
