The Research Group for Medieval Studies prepares source publications, study aids and specialist books that subserve the research and processing of medieval history of Hungary. Within this framework, three series are being edited and published: the Charters of the Angevin era [Anjou-kori oklevéltár] (1301–1387) and the Charters of the Sigismund era [Zsigmondkori oklevéltár] (1387–1437) contain excerpts of Hungarian related archival sources, with Hungarian (or source languaged) critical apparatus.

In addition to these, the volumes of the Subsidia series discuss medieval institutional, administrative and social history topics. The two series of source publications look back on several decades of history, and their editing is a task that spans tender cycles and even generations. The Charters of the Angevin era series was launched by professor Gyula Kristó in Szeged in the 1980s, and he headed the editorial board until his death (2004). Elemér Mályusz began editing the series Charters of the Sigismund era, relying also on the collection of László Fejérpataky, at the end of the 1940s. From the 1990s, his work was taken over by Iván Borsa, who modernized the editing. As a result of their scientific organizing efforts, the first volumes of the Charters of the Sigismund era series were published in the 1950s, and the publication of the other volumes, now in a renewed form, continued from the 1990s. The Charters of the Angevin era series has been published continuously since 1990. The research group in its current form was created by the fusion of the Research Group on Charters of the Sigismund era (1995–2007) and the Research Group for Medieval Studies (1999–2007), and has been operating in Budapest and Szeged since then. In addition to the publication of sources, the members of the research group also write studies that place the phenomena and events of medieval Hungarian history in a broader context, they are involved in university education, regularly hold scientific and educational lectures at various forums and conferences, and perform expert tasks upon request.
