Founded in 1958 and operating continuously since then, the Research Group for Classical Studies has been instrumental in the internationalisation of Hungarian scholarship and the development of new generations of researchers. The group’s work scope and objectives have always focused on relevant and contemporary academic subjects. Currently, the primary task involves the research, publication, linguistic analysis and vocabulary collection of Latin-language literary and historical documents written within the borders of the Kingdom of Hungary or by authors residing in Hungary. These efforts culminate primarily in their publication in the volumes of the Lexicon Latinitatis Medii Aevi Hungariae. In addition to the traditional format, the results, and elements of individual workflows that can be used independently are also available to researchers through a digital database.

A new research direction explores, through lexicological findings, such modern sources of social, ecclesiastical, and military history that arose as an organic continuation of medieval Latin, which illustrate the usage of Latin between the 17th and 19th centuries. From the vast amount of source material, the present work is focused on processing texts related to army chaplaincy and publishing documents—primarily judicial—pertaining to the witch trials in Szeged in the 18th century, which offer significant insights into social history.

Furthermore, group members conduct individual research across various domains such as ancient studies, medieval studies, and Latin philology. Their work not only enhances the research capabilities of their host universities but also supports their teaching mandates as required.
