Our group, founded by Prof. Dr. Attila Dobozy at the Department of Dermatology and Allergology, University of Szeged, has been conducting experimental dermatological research since 1999. Since 2007, the group has been led by Prof. Dr. Lajos Kemény, who continues the tradition of the previous years, focusing on topics and diseases that are challenging both from the point of view of research and clinical care. Thus, we have chosen to study multifactorial, immune-mediated inflammatory diseases such as psoriasis (PSO) and acne vulgaris (AV), which affect a significant proportion of the Hungarian population. Both are caused by a combination of many factors and require a complex approach to understand. PSO is a systemic disease with a characteristic cutaneous manifestation, but affecting the functioning of the whole organism. Its research requires a complex approach, the use of state-of-the-art tools not only in immunology, genomics, molecular and cellular biology, but also in bioinformatics. And the study of AV offers a good opportunity to study the nowadays highly publicised microbiota-skin cell interactions and can provide much insight into the understanding of skin immune function.

In addition to the traditional themes, translational research is one of the new priorities in the new call cycle starting in 2022. This new direction is driven by societal needs and problems encountered in everyday clinical practice. It builds on the knowledge acquired over the past decades and is carried out in close collaboration with clinical and research colleagues working in patient care at the host institution. The ultimate goal of the trials is to develop and implement a cell therapy treatment for patients with severe PSO resistant to biologic therapies in the clinic. The patients will be treated in the clinic’s newly completed GMP Cell Therapy Laboratory, which is unique in Europe, and its associated Phase I testing facility.
We are also regularly involved in consortium projects, where we maintain close links not only with the profession but also with industrial partners. This creates opportunities for the industrial exploitation of our theoretical and applied research results.
Our staff play a prominent role in the teaching and training activities of our home department, the Department of Dermatology and Allergology, Albert Szent-Györgyi Medical School University of Szeged, and in the training of the new generation of R&D staff.
